The Department of Neurosurgery Conducts the First “SGPGI Skull Base Surgery Course”: A Milestone in Neurosurgical Education
The Department of Neurosurgery, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, in collaboration with the Department of Anatomy, King George’s Medical University (KGMU), successfully conducted the 1st SGPGI Skull Base Course – Cadaveric Workshop and Operative Proctorship on October 10–11, 2025.
The two-day academic event brought together practicing neurosurgeons from across India, including participants from leading national institutes of India. The course was widely appreciated for its comprehensive structure, high academic content, and close faculty–participant interaction, earning praise as one of the most insightful cadaveric workshops for mastering skull base anatomy and approaches. The positive feedback highlighted the immense expertise of surgeons at the Department of Neurosurgery, SGPGI, in tackling complicated skull base tumors, vascular pathologies, and other neurosurgical diseases. It also showcased their commitment to expanding this knowledge for the betterment of patient care at large.
The program was led by Dr. Awadhesh Kumar Jaiswal (Organizing Chairperson), with Dr. Kuntal Kanti Das (Course Convenor) and Dr. Ashutosh Kumar (Course Co-Convenor) curating the sessions to ensure an excellent learning experience. Prof Navneet Kumar (HOD, Department of Anatomy) helped immensely in facilitating the availability of adequate resources for anatomical dissection. He also shared key anatomical pearls of skull base anatomy with the participants. The participants benefited from detailed anatomical demonstrations and advanced skull base exposure techniques showcased by eminent faculty members — Dr. Awadhesh Kumar Jaiswal, Dr. Arun Kumar Srivastava, Dr. Anant Mehrotra, Dr. Kamlesh Singh Bhaisora, and Dr. Ravi Shanker.
The workshop’s unique format — combining live operative observation, case-based discussions, and hands-on cadaveric dissections — offered an unmatched opportunity for practical learning. The individualized attention and step-by-step guidance provided by the faculty were particularly commended by attendees.
This initiative underscores SGPGIMS’s continued leadership in neurosurgical training and innovation, reinforcing its position as a center of excellence in advanced neurosurgical education and patient care. It represents a significant stride toward strengthening skull base surgery expertise in Uttar Pradesh and northern India, ensuring that world-class surgical standards continue to evolve within the region.
